Getting Started Starting a Search While Searching Saved Searches Search Options FAQ

Getting Started

Before running a search, you need an active subscription and an Ordinance Seeker account.

Tip: You must be on a FamilySearch pedigree/landscape page for the search buttons to be active.
First time on a computer: Ordinance Seeker finds your saved searches by the FamilySearch account you're signed in to. After installing, open FamilySearch once while signed in so it knows which account's searches to show.

While a Search is Running

Ordinance Seeker runs automatically in the background while you keep FamilySearch open.

Do not click or drag the FamilySearch tree while a search is running. Ordinance Seeker navigates the tree automatically by clicking and expanding nodes. If you interact with the tree — scrolling, dragging, or clicking on people — it will interfere with the search. Opening a different person's tree ends the search. Leave the FamilySearch tab alone while a search is in progress.
Tip: Results are saved to the cloud as they are found, so even a stopped search preserves everything discovered so far.

When a search finishes completely, search complete appears under that search's name in the Saved Searches dropdown. You can also mark any search complete or incomplete manually using Search Options → Mark as Complete.

Viewing Saved Searches

Open the Saved Searches window from the extension popup to review and manage your results.

Ready ordinances: The green letters next to each name show which of that person's family ordinances are ready for you to reserve: B Baptism, C Confirmation, I Initiatory, E Endowment, SP Sealing to Parents, SS Sealing to Spouse. They show what was ready when the search found the person (use Recheck Search to update them); click Open Tree and the green temple icon on their card to see exactly who needs each one. Names saved before version 1.7 show their dates instead.

Search Options

Click Search Options in the Saved Searches window to access these actions for the currently selected search.

Rename Search
Give the current search a new name. The name must not already be in use. The search keeps its results, its starting person and its progress.
Delete Search
Permanently delete the current search and all its results. Cannot be undone.
Mark as Complete / Mark as Incomplete
Manually add or remove the search complete label on a search. Useful if you've finished a search and want to mark it, or want to remove the label.
Delete Multiple Searches
Open a window to select and delete several searches at once. Searches that are currently running or being rechecked are marked Running or Rechecking and can't be selected.
Recheck Search
Check every name in the current search against FamilySearch again. Names that still have ordinances ready get updated letters, and if someone's ordinances are now on a different marriage, the name that opens that card is saved instead. When it finishes, you'll see a summary and can choose whether to remove the names that no longer have anything ready. Nothing is removed unless you confirm. Keep the Saved Searches window and a FamilySearch tab (signed in to the same account) open until it finishes. Great for cleaning up older searches.
Running searches: A search can't be renamed, deleted or rechecked while it's running. End the search first, then try again. While a search is being rechecked, it can't be changed in any other window until the recheck finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free trial?

Yes. You can try Ordinance Seeker free for 7 days. A payment card is required upfront but you will not be charged until the trial ends. Cancel any time before day 7 and you will not be billed.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Go to the Account page, sign in, and click Manage Subscription. This opens the Stripe billing portal where you can cancel, change your plan, or update your payment method. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep access until then.

What happens to my saved searches if I cancel?

Your data is saved in the cloud and is not deleted when you cancel. If you resubscribe later, all your searches will be exactly as you left them.

Can I use one subscription on multiple computers?

Yes. Sign in with the same Ordinance Seeker account on any computer and your subscription and saved searches will be available everywhere.

Can I run searches on multiple computers at the same time?

Yes. You can run searches simultaneously on multiple computers using the same FamilySearch account. Results from all devices sync together automatically — no data is lost or overwritten.

What happens if I delete someone and then run the search again?

Continuing a stopped search skips families it has already checked, so deleted names won't come back that way. But if a search runs over the same part of the tree again — for example, starting it over after it completed — anyone it finds who still has ordinances ready will be added again, including people you deleted.

Why doesn't a search say "search complete"?

A search is marked complete automatically only after it finishes scanning the entire tree without being stopped. If a search was stopped or hasn't been run all the way through, it won't say search complete. You can also add or remove it manually using Search Options → Mark as Complete.

Can I search from someone else's account?

Yes. Each FamilySearch account has its own separate set of saved searches. When you log in as a different account, Ordinance Seeker automatically switches to that account's searches.

Saved Searches says it couldn't tell which FamilySearch account to show

This happens after installing the extension on a new computer, before it has seen your FamilySearch account. Open FamilySearch, make sure you're signed in, then open Saved Searches again from the extension. If a search says "Couldn't detect your FamilySearch account" or "The FamilySearch account on this page changed", reload the FamilySearch page and start the search again.

Why wasn't someone with a green temple icon saved?

Ordinance Seeker only saves people who have at least one ordinance you can actually reserve. It skips cards where the ordinances were already reserved and shared by someone else (the green icons with a clock), people FamilySearch flags as possible duplicates, since those can't be requested until the duplicates are reviewed, people who need a close relative's permission, and people with data problems on that card (for example, a child listed as born before their parent), since FamilySearch won't let you request those until the data is fixed. It also skips the rare marriage that isn't the default for either spouse (both married more than once), since no tree link opens that card directly. A card can also look green because of a child's sealing to parents, which is listed under the parents' card instead.

What do the green letters next to each name mean?

They're the ordinances that were ready to reserve when the search found that person: B (Baptism), C (Confirmation), I (Initiatory), E (Endowment), SP (Sealing to Parents) and SS (Sealing to Spouse). Someone else may reserve them later, so open the person's tree to see the current status before reserving, or use Recheck Search to update a whole search at once.

I clicked Open Tree, but the ordinances weren't there. Why?

The green letters aren't only that person's own ordinances. They belong to the family card that opens when you click the green temple icon on that person in Open Tree. A card covers the couple and their children, so the ordinances might be for the spouse, or a child's Sealing to Parents, rather than for the person whose name was saved.

The letters also show what was ready when the search (or the last Recheck Search) found that card. Since then, you or someone else may have reserved and shared those ordinances. This often happens when you reserve on a close relative's card first: the same people appear on more than one card (a child is on their parents' card and on their own), so reserving on one card can take ordinances that another saved name was showing. Use Recheck Search to update a search and remove names with nothing left to reserve.

The extension isn't finding anything — what's wrong?

Make sure you're on a FamilySearch landscape/pedigree page (the URL contains /landscape/) and that you're logged in to FamilySearch. If the problem persists, try refreshing the page and starting again.

How do I delete my account?

Go to the Account page, sign in, and scroll down to the Danger Zone section. Click Delete Account and confirm. This permanently removes your account and cancels any active subscription. This cannot be undone. Your saved searches are not deleted, because they belong to your FamilySearch account and someone else may use it too. To remove them, delete them in Open Saved Searches before deleting your account.

Why does the number found not match the number saved in Saved Searches?

The extension saves results to the cloud in batches to stay efficient — roughly every 10 to 30 seconds while a search is running. The progress box and popup show how many people have been found so far, while Saved Searches (both the list and the number in the search dropdown) shows how many have actually been saved. They match once the search finishes or after the next save.
